Rafael Gonzalez was created in the 1930’s.

It was in this brand that the 6 1/2 inch by 42 gauge cigar, which has the factory name of Cervantes, was the first called a Lonsdale after Lord Lonsdale, the famous English sporting Earl and cigar aficionado of that period. Now many other brands use the name as well.

On its lid label each box carries a curious inscription written in English to the effect that the cigars should be smoked within one month of the date of shipment from Havana or else they should be carefully matured for about one year.

Rafael Gonzalez cigars contain a light tasting blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Tasting Notes
Despite the small size, this little tawny-coloured cigar has a voluminous draw that imparts a smoke loaded with oak and maple notes accentuated by black pepper and earthy carob.

The José L. Piedra brand originates from the Piedra family, who settled near Santa Clara, in the heart of the Remedios tobacco-producing region of Cuba, at the end of the 19th century. Their special blend is made with tobacco from the Vuelta Arriba region and is presented in this Mini format.

José L. Piedra cigars are notable for the fact that the tobacco leaves used come exclusively from the Vuelta Abajo region.

The Piedra family settled in the Asturias region in the 1880s. Later, they moved to Cuba, near the town of Santa Clara, located in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region, where tobacco had been cultivated since the 16th century, and began producing cigars.

José L. Piedra Piedra, the second generation, founded and developed the brand we know today. These cigars are affordable and are admired for their powerful flavor.

Perlas

by Rafael Gonzalez is a cigar that is universally loved. Its size of 102 mm in length by 15.87 in diameter allows for a smoking time of about 30 minutes.

The mild and delicate aroma of Perlas is suitable for most people, from beginners to the most experienced. A cigar in the great Cuban tradition, 100% Havana (Puro) and hand-rolled.

The history of the Rafael Gonzalez brand remains largely a mystery. Traces of the latter were found when it was purchased by El Rey del Mundo in 1936, then disappeared in the early 1940s and reappeared in 1965. The existence of Rafael Gonzalez at the origin of the brand has never been proven.

The Rafael Gonzalez Perlas is a valuable Cuban cigar that should not be overlooked.

Before lighting:

Dark Maduro wrapper with a slight dusty bloom. Very pleasant to look at. It has a decent structure, although the cap is not as well made as other cigars of this size such as the Cohiba Siglo 1 or Monte Cristo No. 5. There are small veins that are not dominant in any way and overall the cigar feels very heavy for its small size and has a well-filled and uniform feel. The smell is a mild rustic smell with a hint of sweetness and is reminiscent of dark chocolate.

The cold palate was somewhat sweet with flavors of roasted nuts and typical Cuban tobacco. The band is a dull, unmarked band, other vitolas have a darker, more shiny band. According to the information available, the dull band was discontinued in 2010, so we suspect that these cigars are old, which explains the band.

Taste:

First third: This cigar is great from the first taste. Mild to medium Cuban tobacco flavor that is fairly complex for a small, inexpensive cigar. The dominant flavor you taste is coffee, followed by a slightly sweet chocolate flavor. Lots of creamy smoke, a sharp, perfect burn, and a nice solid palate.

Second third: Same flavor profile but more intense. As this little cigar gets halfway through, it approaches a medium tobacco flavor, but the coffee you tasted from the beginning is gone.
