After seeing what experts have to say about the launch of the new Vegueros vitolas in 2013, we decided to try one of them. There is a story that says that this cigar is the poorer cousin of the Cohiba Lancero.

A cigar with a beautiful and elegant appearance. Personally, I have a special interest in Lancero cigars. These cigars were launched in 1997 and their production stopped in 2010. This cigar has a 38 gauge ring and a length of 7.6 inches.

The wrapper is a faded, old brown. It is paper thin and rustic in appearance. The aromas from the wrapper are weak. There are hints of leather and cocoa, but not much else.
The texture is good. It has a bit of a spongy feel, but it won’t be a problem.

The triple cap has a bit of a rough edge, but it punches through easily. The end of the cigar also feels fairly dense, but nothing to worry about.

The mouthfeel of the cigar is good. It is a bit loose, but nothing to be bothered by. The initial flavors are: cedar, mint, herbal notes and cream.

First third

A very strong hit of herbal notes, cedar and oolong tea at the beginning. There is also a bit of a metallic and sour taste. Very strong and dominant. This cigar has a lot of impact right from the start.
The strength is medium to fairly high. The herbal notes are really prominent now.

The cigar burns quite well. The ash is dark grey. Fairly even. However, it produces a lot of smoke. Easy to swallow.

The aftertaste is long and strong. The herbal notes take over the palate and don’t let the other flavors show through….

Second third

Now the cigar has settled in. That initial sharp burst of herbal flavor is gone. The sour and metallic flavors are gone too. They have been replaced by cocoa, cream, herbal notes and roasted nuts.
The smoke production, mouthfeel and burn are still excellent. Everything is good here.

The aftertaste is much more enjoyable, now the herbal notes allow the other flavors to show through. There is a slight saltiness to the cigar that works well with the roasted nuts, herbal notes, cocoa and cream. The flavor profile is very good.

The strength of the cigar has also been reduced, allowing the flavors to really blend and dance on the palate.

The final third

Now the cigar is really great. The addition of honey along with the roasted nuts, herbal notes, cream and cocoa makes a nice combination. A great flavor profile to end the final third.

The strength of the cigar remains at a medium level. Great for the final part of this cigar.

The aftertaste, burn and smoke production are still great.

The aftertaste is exactly what it should be. The honey really ties everything together. That sweetness, along with the roasted nuts, cocoa, cream and herbal notes are really nice. It has a nice, long finish on the palate. Very tasty!

A very good cigar. With dominant herbal notes and a metallic, sour taste, it started well, then balanced and finished strong.

A good cigar for a change of pace compared to the Cohiba Trinity of Lancero, Trinidad Fondador and Montecristo Especial No. 1. If they are available again, add a box or two of them to your humidor.
