The history of the COHIBA SIGLO Cigar
The COHIBA SIGLO 5 dates back to 1992, when it was launched as part of the SIGLO series to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. The SIGLO series consists of six cigars, each with a different size and composition, representing different centuries of Cuban history.
The COHIBA SIGLO 5 is the fifth cigar in the series, representing the 20th century. The name SIGLO means “century” in Spanish.
The process of making the COHIBA SIGLO 5 cigars is meticulous, involving several steps. The tobacco leaves used for the filler and binder are selected from the best plantations in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba, considered the best tobacco growing region in the world. The leaves are hand-picked and then sorted by color and size. The leaves are then dried in warehouses for several weeks to remove moisture and develop flavor.
Once dried, the leaves are fermented for several months to enhance their aroma and reduce their nicotine content. The fermentation process is closely monitored by experts who regularly check the temperature and humidity levels. After fermentation, the leaves are aged in wooden barrels for at least two years to enhance their quality and flavor.
The wrapper leaf used for the COHIBA SIGLO 5 cigars is grown in Ecuador under the natural shade of clouds and trees. This gives the leaf its light brown color and silky texture. The leaf is also cured, fermented and aged before being shipped to Cuba.
The process of making the COHIBA SIGLO 5 cigars is done by hand by experienced torcedores who work in pairs. One who glues the filler and binder leaves together and the other who wraps them with the wrapper leaf.
The torcedores use a special technique called “entubado” which involves rolling each filler leaf individually into a tube before bundling them. This creates better airflow and combustion for the cigar. The torcedores also place a triple cap on the head of the cigar, a distinctive feature of Cuban cigars.
The quality control process for the COHIBA SIGLO 5 cigar is very meticulous and thorough, ensuring that each cigar meets the brand’s high standards. The cigars are visually inspected for any flaws or defects in their appearance or construction.
They are also tested for their airflow, burn, ash, smoke volume, flavor and aroma by trained tasters using a special device called the “Drummaster”. Cigars that pass these tests are then affixed with the distinctive COHIBA label and packaged in cedar-lined wooden boxes.
The experience of smoking a COHIBA SIGLO 5 cigar is a highly enjoyable and pleasurable experience for any cigar lover. The cigar has a good airflow and even burn that produces a thick, creamy smoke. The flavor profile is balanced and complex, with notes of cedar, leather, spice and cocoa that evolve over the course of the smok. The aroma is rich and pleasant, with notes of wood, earth and honey. The cigar has a medium to high draw, but is not overpowering or harsh. The cigar lasts an average of about 30 to 40 minutes.
The COHIBA SIGLO 5 cigar can be paired with various foods and beverages to enhance its flavor and complement its characteristics, such as: dark chocolate, nuts, cheese, dried fruits or meat dishes, coffee, tea and other beverages.
