Sancho Panza Cuban cigars
Seeing the year of production, that they are no longer produced and in excellent condition, how can you say no? You can always enjoy Sancho Panza as a great cigar for variety. It is one of the few brands, if not the only brand, that you can taste the sea salt in its taste.
The Sancho Panza Bachilleres 1998 is an interesting cigar. It is almost unknown and many people do not know about it. When you get your hands on one of these old and vintage cigars, you are in for a real treat. This cigar was offered in a 40 ring gauge, 4.6 inches long and the size of a Franciscanos vitola. These cigars were available in boxes of 25 and cabinets of 50. Production of the boxes of 25 was discontinued in 2006 and the cabinets of 50 in 2003.
The wrapper is very thin, like paper. It looks very delicate. It is a rustic chocolate brown color. It reminds you of oak. The wrapper itself is fairly smooth. It has a little bump here and there. It is not a problem. The aromas of the wrapper are spicy. Wild mushrooms, salt and the smell of the barn, maybe something like mushroom risotto!
The structure is good. Overall the cigar is fairly firm and when you squeeze it, it softens a little. There are no soft spots. The triple cap looks good. It is a little rustic and it looks like the bottom is full. Perhaps the cutter blade was a little dull the day this sample was made, because there is a bit of extra tobacco sticking out of the bottom.
A quick cut with a cutter and it’s ready.
The flavor is good. Excellent airflow with a slight resistance.
Initial flavors of cold palate, earth, sand and dirt, wild mushrooms and a bit of leather.
First third
Lots of pepper, with earth and espresso. A strong flavor profile to start with; very “in your face”. Not spicy; just a buzz with distinct, up-front flavors. Strength is currently at a medium level.
The back palate is a bit spicy and bubbly; like when you drink Sprite too fast. That tingling sensation on the palate.
The burn is excellent. Very sharp and the ash is a grayish black color. The flavor and smoke production are good too. The flavor is a little open, but it shouldn’t burn too hot.
The finish is a bit short. Very strong and spicy at first, but it fades very quickly. Creamy and a hint of sour cherry, with pepper, earth and espresso.
Second third
The spice has been significantly reduced, giving way to more sour cherry, earth, leather and espresso. The power has also been reduced. A strong profile, but it doesn’t have that initial intensity and energy. The back palate is much softer, almost creamy. The sea salt note is slowly, very slowly, starting to emerge….
The sweetness, burn and smoke production are excellent. No problem.
The finish is a bit longer, which is strange because the power has been reduced. The leather and earth really come forward and stay on the palate more than the sour cherry, sea salt and espresso notes.
Last third
What a change of pace! The sea salt and toasted nuts come on very strongly and quickly. Reminds you of ground almonds. Very distinct. It makes your mouth water, as if it was buried in salt. The sour cherries are gone and the leather, earth and espresso have given way to this dynamic duo.
The burn, the flavor and the smoke production are still great. The burn is even and nice throughout the smoke. It is a bit fast due to the free flavor.
The finish is all sea salt and toasted nuts. A hint of pepper joins them on the back of the palate. It is also longer and the strength has picked up again. The earth and leather are more complementary. The flavor profile is really unique. It is a nice change of pace.
There were nice subtleties throughout the smoke. The changes were subtle until the last third and then, wow! a complete change. Very nice and unexpected. You will love the sea salt and toasted nut flavor profile at the end.
The flow and swing in strength was interesting. I wish the power was maintained more in the second third, however, it was nice to see a cigar with an energetic start and finish. The flavor profile is unique and seems understated. We are glad we had the opportunity to smoke these cigars, as they are a good cigar for variety.
